Local Area

Luxury 17th Century farmhouse with idyllic riverside location
Although our address is sited as Juillac our nearest village is Flaujagues, it is a quiet village occupying an idyllic riverside location and home to a restaurant with an excellent chef, a café bar, post office, boulanger and well-stocked shop, all within 10 minutes walk from the house. Several large supermarkets/hypermarkets are within a 10-15 minute drive.

There are many local fetes and festivities throughout Summer – the night markets in the local surrounding villages are not to be missed. Local wines and food stalls, to be consumed on the long trestle tables along with market stalls and often live music to listen to or dance, children always welcome.

If you want to eat out you are spoilt for choice, there are many fabulous local restaurants and plenty of wine tastings in the local vineyards.

Activities
This is a great area for those who like to explore, cycling is very popular in this area, lots of local walks and canoeing/kayaking is also very popular and available locally in the village of Pessac. Tennis courts can be found close by at Pessac and Gensac. There is a lake with a man made beach 5 minutes drive away, which has an onsite restaurant, pedalos and jet ski’s for hire. Within a 30 minute drive is Lac de Gurson, again has a man made beach, which is newly renovated and has great facilities including horseriding. There is a beautiful golf course at Chateau Vigier 30 minutes drive away with amazing facilities and a beautiful restaurant.
Castillon La Bataille
We are a 10 minute drive from the town of Castillon La Bataille, famous for its Summer re-enactments of the end of the Hundred Years War, an elaborate spectacle using scores of actors, horses, dogs and ending with an impressive fireworks display. The town holds two markets a week and has four supermarkets as well as pharmacies, doctors, restaurants and cafes etc.

Ste Foy La Grande & St Emilion
In the other direction Ste Foy La Grande holds a very popular and lively large Saturday market and also has some lovely restaurants. The famous World Heritage site of St Emilion is a 15 minute drive, famous for its chateaux and vineyards. It boasts the largest underground monolithic church in the world. There are guided tours of the catacombs in English & French. It has a 5* tourist information centre where they speak excellent English. This is one of my favourite places in the whole world and is a must visit (with flat comfortable shoes!). Has fabulous restaurants and wine shops and amazing views over the whole region.

Bordeaux & Bergerac
If you fancy something a bit livelier, the old city of Bordeaux is incredibly elegant and vibrant, awarded world heritage status for its dramatic sweeping classical and neo-classical waterfront and is less than an hours drive away. It boasts famous restaurants and beautiful designer shops and is definitely worth a visit as is Bergerac a 40 minute drive away. Bergerac also has a water park, a children’s indoor play centre, indoor laser centre, bowling centre and go karting for children & adults. All these activities are in the same area and just outside the main town.
